NOTE: GlobalProtect VPN is being implemented as a replacement for the current Cisco Any Connect VPN solution. The implementation is expected to complete by July 31, 2021. DIT encourages you to install the GlobalProtect VPN client for testing purposes. While testing, please make sure you are not connected to Cisco VPN at the same time. If you run into any issues and want to notify the project team, you can do so at https://access.umd.edu.

Connect on MacOS

  1. Go to access.umd.edu. You will be directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page.
  2. Sign in using your university Directory ID and password.
  3. Click GlobalProtect Agent at the top right of the portal.
  4. Click the Download Mac 32/64 bit GlobalProtect agent hyperlink.

  5. Run the downloaded file named GlobalProtect.pkg and continue through the installation instructions.
    • You will need your computer’s administrator username and password to install.
  6. Once installed, the GlobalProtect icon will appear in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
  7. Click the icon to set up the VPN.
  8. Type access.umd.edu into the Portal Address field then click Connect.

    NOTE: If the application stays on the Connecting screen and does not prompt for your NetID and Password, open System Preferences, navigate to Security & Privacy and then General, unlock the settings page using your Mac's administrator username and password and then Allow the computer to load the Palo Alto software (GlobalProtect).
  9. You will be directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page to sign in using your university Directory ID and password
  10. When successfully connected, the application will say connected and the icon in the top bar will turn opaque and include a shield

Connect on Windows

  1. Go to access.umd.edu. You will be directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page.
  2. Sign in using your university Directory ID and password.
  3. Click GlobalProtect Agent at the top right of the portal.
  4. Download the GlobalProtect agent that matches your computer's operating system.

  5. Double-click the installation file GlobalProtect64.msi at the bottom right of your computer.
    • You will need your computer’s administrator username and password to install.
  6. Follow the installation process. Once installation is complete, click Close
  7. Click the GlobalProtect icon  in the task bar. 
  8. Type access.umd.edu into the Portal Address field then click Connect.
  9. You will be directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page to sign in using your university Directory ID and password
  10. You are now connected. The icon is located in the toolbar.

Connect on iOS

  1. Go to the App Store and install GlobalProtect.
  2. Tap GlobalProtect open.
  3. Type access.umd.edu in the address bar.
  4. Tap Connect.

  5. Tap Allow to give GlobalProtect permission to add configurations. You will be prompted to enter your device’s passcode.
  6. Enter your university Directory ID and password on the CAS login page. Complete the MFA authentication.
  7. You will then be connected to GlobalProtect.
    Once connected, the app will display connected and to Tap to disconnect.

Connect on Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Search for GlobalProtect by Palo Alto and Tap Install.
  3. After the installation is complete, tap Open to launch the app.
  4. Type access.umd.edu in the address bar.
  5. Tap Connect.
  6. You will be redirected to CAS to log in with your Directory ID and password.
  7. A Connection Request will display. Tap OK. The VPN icon appears in the status bar.
  8. Your connection is set up. The VPN icon will appear in the status bar to indicate you are connected.

Connect on Linux

Since the GlobalProtect installation requires multi-factor authentication (MFA), only the GUI version of the GlobalProtect client can be used with Linux systems. The following Linux versions are supported for the GUI version:

Install instructions

  1. Download the appropriate file for your Linux system from TERPWare.
    • GlobalProtect_UI_rpm-5.2.6.0-18.rpm for RedHat 7 or Centos
    • GlobalProtect_UI_deb-5.2.6.0-18.deb for Ubunto and Debian
  2. Open the terminal on your device and install GlobalProtect from the directory where you downloaded the above file. Note that the commands may vary depending on your version of Linux.
  3. When prompted for a portal address, enter access.umd.edu.
  4. Once installation is complete, GlobalProtect will appear in your menu bar at the top of your Linux system

International student instructions

There are two additional steps for international students using GlobalConnect; add a portal and select a gateway.

Add the access.umd.edu portal

You can switch between different portals without having to re-enter the portal address each time you connect. The most recently connected portal is selected from the status panel.

  1. Select the portal drop-down menu.
  2. Select Manage Portals.
  3. Enter access.umd.edu in the portal address field.
  4. Click Save.

Select the TunnelAll Gateway

  1. Select the Gateway drop-down menu.
  2. Select TunnelAll Gateway.
