You can use incoming email messages in the months before losing access to your UMD email account as prompts to update your contact information with the sending organization. When you receive a message in your UMD account that is not university business, update your contact information with that organization. You may need to visit their website or make a phone call to find out how to update your email address in their records. Some emails will include a link you can use to update your contact information.
Some important contacts don't email you regularly, so you should make a list of important contacts and update your contact information with them. Checklist of potential important contacts to update:
There is no way to transfer active subscriptions, newsletters, and email lists between email accounts; you will need to manually resubscribe to these on your new email account.
If you have any personal 2FA tied to your university email, you will need to follow steps specific to each email platform for changing it to another email.
Some types of 2FA methods will also allow you to add an alternate email address or an alternate method that doesn't require an email address.
Some account platforms such as social media, utilities, banking, shopping, travel, and more allow you to change the email associated with the account through their respective settings and help centers. If you have a personal account associated with your UMD email, you can individually research and change the associated email to your new one if you are able.
You can export your personal contacts connected to your UMD email to your new personal email:
You can export calendar events from your old email to a new email; learn how from Google's guide on exporting calendar events.
Note: This has to be done from a desktop and can't be done in the Google Calendar app.
You can visit the Google account device management page to review your linked devices and ensure they are all disconnected or have an appropriate substitute once you lose access to your university email.
Before you lose access to your account, remember to save any personal attachments to keep them or to upload them into your new email account. Remember to not save any sensitive university records or content.
