To organize your emails into categories like Work or Personal, you can create labels in Gmail. Then you can create a filter to automatically route emails to labels. Labels are different from folders:
- Only you can access your labels.
- The people you email don’t get them.
- When you delete an email, it’s removed from every label and your inbox.
These instructions were adapted from a Google Support article on creating Labels. To learn more, read the Google Label management support article.
Step 1: Create a label
- On your computer, go to UMD Gmail.
- On the left, next to Labels, click the plus icon to create a new label.

- Enter a label name.
- You can optionally include your label in another label; check the box next to Nest label under.
- Click Create.

Step 2: Create a filter that automatically labels emails
- In the search box at the top, click the Show search options button.

- Enter terms to match specific messages. For example:
- To filter and label emails from specific senders, in the From: field, enter the email addresses.
- To find emails about payments, you might enter the word payments in the Has the words: field.
- Click Create filter.
- Scroll to Apply the label: and check the box and select a label.

- Click Create filter.
