On August 10, 2026, the Fischer Identity project will modernize the University of Maryland's Identity Management (IDM) systems to deliver a streamlined and user-friendly experience.

As part of this initiative, the user interface (UI) is being updated with modern frameworks to enhance usability and accessibility. This page provides an overview of the new UI updates, including examples of changes to key features such as profile management, password updates, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and account claiming processes. While the examples listed here demonstrate significant enhancements, they are not exhaustive.

Home page

After signing into Fischer Identity, users will be directed to the new home screen. This page provides access to profile information, password management, and other account settings and features.

Profile page

To view your own profile, go to My Profile in the left sidebar. This replaces the original Profile page (identity.umd.edu/profile).

Change passphrase

1. Go to My Passwords in the left sidebar.
2. Enter your current password,
3. Enter and confirm your new password in the appropriate fields.
4. Click Reset to apply the change. 
   

This replaces both the password.umd.edu and identity.umd.edu/profile#passphrase pages.

MFA profile

Users can update their MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) (DUO) devices and generate bypass codes by navigating to My Security on the left sidebar. This replaces the identity.umd.edu/mfaprofile page. 

NOTE: Devices can still be managed directly through DUO when progressing through SSO (Single Sign-On) (Shibboleth/CAS).

Forgot passphrase

There is a new flow for Forgot Passphrase. This replaces the identity.umd.edu/password/forgotpassword page.

1. Enter your Directory ID and click Submit.
   
2. Choose a verification option from the list to verify your identity. A PIN will be sent to you through the selected method.
   
3. Enter the PIN and click Verify.
   
4. Enter a new passphrase in both fields and click Reset Password.

Account claim

New users claiming their account will have a new UI flow.
NOTE: The Locate Your Identity (ID Verification) screen may differ depending on user type. This replaces the identity.umd.edu/id/newuser page.

1. Go to New User Identity Verification.
2. Verify your identity by filling out the form below:
   
   • Last Name
   • Date of birth
   • Authorization code
     
3. Review and accept the Acceptable Use Policy by checking the box, then click Next to continue.
4. Select your Directory ID and set up recovery information. Click Next to continue. 
   
5. Create a new password, re-enter it to confirm, and click Reset Password to complete the process.
