This article is meant to serve as a quick checklist for new community members to help familiarize them with basic IT systems and services at the University of Maryland (UMD). This is not definitive information about these topics. Looking into these systems further and using them on your own will help you gain a deeper understanding.
The Division of Information Technology (DIT) operates the University's IT infrastructure and supports UMD students, faculty, and staff.
Faculty, staff, students, sponsored affiliates and associates have a user ID known as Directory ID. Your Directory ID and passphrase grant access to most online services and systems at UMD such as the Wi-Fi Network (eduroam), email, ELMS-Canvas, Testudo, and Workday.
The University Identification (UID) is the nine digit number which is used for most forms and is printed on your University ID card.
To activate your Directory ID, follow the instructions in Active Your Directory ID and Account Services.
When accessing most UMD IT systems you will be prompted to login into CAS with your Directory ID and passphrase.
After entering your Directory ID and passphrase, pressing Log In will initiate a Duo MFA request. MFA improves security by requiring another device to approve your sign in. To manage your MFA and learn more view Authenticate With Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
Workday is UMD's information system for Human Resources, Finance, and Student Information. If you are a Contingent employee this is where your timesheets are. Employees can also request absences and track leave balances. Access UMD Workday by clicking on the option to login in with CAS.
Visit Workday's Learning Hub to learn more.
UMD DIT recommends use of the Google Workspace which contains the word processor Docs, presentation app Slides, spreadsheet app Sheets, Gmail, and Google Calendar. The Google Workspace is cloud-based meaning that any work done is constantly being saved. Use Google Drive to share and store documents with your teammates and others.
While you can use your personal Google account to access these apps, use your UMD account when doing UMD business.
To login into your account, and access these apps:
Terpware is the software distribution site for UMD. Various software are available for download for students, faculty, and staff. Search the software you want and it will have links or instructions for download and setup.
