How to use the new URL Shortener

How do I create a new short URL?

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Paste the URL into the Destination URL field at the top.
    • If you want a custom short URL enter the keyword(s) in the Keyword field.
    • For example: go.umd.edu/drupal-lite-online-course
    •  If you leave the Keyword field blank, the service will use a random string of characters.
    • For example: go.umd.edu/38bk
  3.  Click the Link It button.

How do I modify a short URL?

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Find the link in the list.
  3. Click the three dots in the Actions column.

  4. Select Edit.
    • Edit or change the destination URL.
    • Edit or change the keyword portion of the link.
  5. Click Submit.

How can I share the shortened link?

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Find the link in the list.
    • To share the shortened URL click the Copy button.
    • To download the QR code click the three dots in the Actions column and select QR Code.

How can I use Collections to organize and manage short URLs?

You can use Collections to organize and share management of your short URLs. A Collection can have multiple members, and any of the members can add, edit, change, or delete any of the short URLs in the collection.

Create a Collection for short URLs

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Click My Collections in the menu bar at the top of the page.
  3. Click the Add New Collection button.
  4. Enter a name and description for the collection.
  5. Click Create Collection.

Add members to a Collection

  1. Click My Collections in the menu bar at the top of the page.
  2. Find the collection you want to edit.
  3. Click the €three dots button in the Actions column.
  4. Select Members.
  5. Enter the person’s DirectoryID.
  6. Select the person from the results list.
  7. Click the Add Member button.

Remove a member from the Collection

  1. Click My Collections in the menu bar at the top of the page.
  2. Find the collection you want to edit.
  3. Click the €three dots button in the Actions column.
  4. Select Members.
  5. Locate the person in the list of members
  6. Click the Remove button.

How do I access short URL utilization data?

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Find the link in the list.
  3. Click the three dots in the Actions column and select Stats.

How do I transfer ownership to another UMD member? 

Short URLs are owned by the person that created them. You can transfer one (or more) short URLs to another person.

  1. Log in to go.umd.edu.
  2. Check the box for the short URL you want to transfer. You can select multiple items.
  3. Click the Bulk Actions button at the top of the table.

  4. Select Give to a different user. The Give URLs window is displayed.
  5. Enter the Directory ID of the new owner. The tool will search the University directory for a match.
  6. Select the person from the list of matches.
  7. Click Send URLs. A confirmation window is displayed.
  8. Click the Confirm button.

The status bar at the top shows URLs that are pending approval. When the recipient claims them, the message will no longer be displayed for the links. The person receiving the link will need to log in to go.umd.edu and click the Accept button. They can also choose to Reject the transfer.  If the transfer is rejected ownership will return to the original individual.
