Give Extra Time or Attempts in New Quizzes in ELMS-Canvas for Instructors

Table of Contents

The following instructions apply only to quizzes created in New Quizzes.

NOTE: The Quiz Extensions tool, which is used in Classic Quizzes to extend time or give extra attempts for students on all timed assessments, does not work with New Quizzes. If you currently use the Quiz Extension tool and have a course with a very large enrollment, you may continue to use Classic Quizzes. The steps below allow instructors to perform a similar task within New Quizzes.

New Quizzes does allow instructors to extend time for a student for all quizzes in a course at one time. Instructors do not need to repeat this process for quizzes added after this step has been completed. The extension will automatically apply to any future quizzes created in New Quizzes.

Adjust the quiz availability window

The amount of time that a quiz is open for students is determined by the availability window set by the instructor. For example, if the quiz is only available from 10-11 am, it will close at 11 am for everyone.

The first step in extending time for a student is to adjust the availability window of a quiz to ensure that all students will have enough time to complete the quiz with their extended time. In the example above, if your original time for the quiz was from 10-11 am, and you have students who require an accommodation of 1.5 or double time, you will need to extend the quiz availability to 10 am-12 pm.  Extending the availability window does not give additional time to other students to complete the quiz. Once a student begins taking a quiz, they will have the total time to complete the quiz as established for them by the instructor in the quiz settings.
