Creating a NameBadge and Adding It as a Signature to Your Email

What is NameCoach and what is a NameBadge?

NameCoach is a resource that enables you to record a pronunciation of your name (your NameBadge) and share this pronunciation via ELMS-Canvas or in your email signature. NameCoach can be accessed by faculty and students via ELMS-Canvas to create a NameCoach Roster, which allows those with access to a course with a NameCoach Roster in ELMS-Canvas to view the first name, last name, email address, phonetic spelling and pronunciation of the members of the course.  To set up a NameCoach Roster on ELMS-Canvas, please see: NameCoach and NamePage Access and Features.

You can also access NameCoach directly by going to the NameCoach site and creating a NameBadge and account by using your UMD e-mail address. You can then add a link to your NameBadge in your e-mail signature through the NameCoach site. (Note that accessing NameCoach directly does not route you through the University of Maryland Single Sign-on [SSO] authentication.)

Recording your NameBadge and creating your NameCoach account

If you have previously recorded your name in NameCoach, continue to Adding your NameBadge to your email signature.

Signing in to record your name as a NameBadge

If you have not created a NameCoach account, go to https://www.name-coach.com/ and do the following:

  1. Click the Login link in the upper-right-hand corner of the page (this will take you to an option to create a new account, if this is your first time logging in).
  2. To create an account, click on the SIGN UP button to get started.  This button may appear at the upper-right-hand corner of the log-in page (see first screenshot below), or you may need to click on an image of three parallel lines to bring up the SIGN UP option on the left-hand panel of the page (see second screenshot below):

  3.  After clicking SIGN UP, you will be brought to a page asking you to choose how to record your NameBadge.  Go to the section listed For Individuals, and click Record and share your name:

Recording your name and creating a NameBadge

  1. After clicking Record and share your name, you will be brought to a window to create your NameBadge.  In the first part of the window, provide your e-mail address, name, and full name that you will record.  You also have the options of adding any information you would you like to note about the pronunciation of your name and indicating any pronoun information you'd like to share:




  2. In the bottom part of the window, you will record your name. You have three options to record: by Phone, using the NameCoach Web Recorder, or by using the Uploader.

Record your name by Phone

If you would like to use your phone to record your name, NameCoach can call you to make the recording.

  1. Enter only the digits of your area code and telephone number in the box provided.
  2. Click the Call me now! button.
  3. When NameCoach calls, follow the prompts to record your name.
  4. Hang up.
  5. Click Submit and Finish at the bottom of the window, and you will have created your NameBadge!

Record your name using the Web Recorder

If you have access to a microphone, you can record your name over the Web.

  1. Click the Record button.
  2. Speak your name into the microphone.
  3. Click the Stop button to end recording.
  4. Click the Play button to hear your recording.
  5. Optional:  If you would like to re-record your name, click the Record button again.
  6. Click Submit and Finish at the bottom of the window, and you will have created your NameBadge!

Record using the Uploader

If you already have a file of your recorded name, you can upload this file.

  1. Locate the audio file on your computer and drag it into the Drag a file here box, or click Browse to select your file from the location where it is saved.
  2. Click Submit and Finish at the bottom of the window, and you will have created your NameBadge!

Adding your NameBadge to your email signature

Your Recordings

In your NameCoach account, go to the Your Recordings tab in your NameCoach Dashboard.  You will see the recording you have made for your NameBadge (your Name Profile), and also any recordings you may have associated with an ELMS-Canvas course.

Adding your NameBadge to your email signature

Select your NameBadge to add to your email signature

  1. In the bottom half of the Your Recordings page, click the tab: Add NameBadge to your Email Signature.
  2. The NameBadge can be displayed in your email signature in three different styles:  as just a button; as a button with the text "Hear my name;" and as a hyperlink.
  3. Choose how you wish your NameBadge to be indicated in your email signature,

Add your NameBadge to your email signature (gmail)

  1. Sing in to your Google Gmail account with your UMD credentials.
  2. In the top-right corner, click on the gear icon to open your email settings.
  3. Click on See All Settings.

  4. You will be brought to the General tab.  Scroll down this page to the Signature section.
  5. In the Signature text editing area, place your cursor where you wish your NameBadge indicator to be, and paste by pressing Ctrl+V on your keyboard or right-clicking and selecting Paste.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click Save Settings to save your NameBadge to your email signature.
