Classroom polling using PowerPoint

Enable mobile responses in TurningPoint

If students are using clickers, be sure they know the classroom polling channel (unique channel id is posted in each classroom). Students using a browser or mobile device will need a session ID participate. To enable mobile responses and create a session ID:

  1. Launch the TurningPoint desktop application.
  2. Select Continue or Sign In as prompted.
  3. Click on the PowerPoint Start now tab and open your PowerPoint presentation.
  4. Select Mobile Responses from the menu. If Random is selected, a Session ID will be randomly generated.To reserve a unique Session ID follow the steps below:
    • Click Reserve.
    • Enter a unique Session ID between 4 and 14 characters. The characters may be letters or numbers but must include at least one letter.
    • Click Reserve.

Run a TurningPoint session

  1. Launch TurningPoint from your desktop.
  2. Select Continue or Sign In as prompted.
  3. Open your PowerPoint presentation.
  4. Create a Course or select an existing Course from the drop-down menu.
  5. To enable mobile responses, follow the instructions in the section above.
  6. Click Start, then let your students know the Session ID.
  7. Start the PowerPoint slideshow.
  8. At the end of the slideshow, click Save.
  9. Optionally rename your session to reflect the completion of polling.
  10. Select Finish.

Access session results

  1. Sign in to your ELMS-Canvas course.
  2. Select Clickers from the course menu.
  3. Locate the course you want to see and select View. The course will open the Roster page.
  4. Click Results on the top navigation bar. This will load the first session by default.
  5. Select a session from the panel on the left to view results.

Classroom polling with poll anywhere

  1. Launch the TurningPoint application from your desktop.
  2. Click Start Now under Anywhere Polling and open your presentation (could be a Word Document, Keynote, Web page, etc.).
  3. For clickers, check the Channel.
  4. Enable Mobile Response if students are using mobile devices or laptops. (students access with a downloaded app or going to ttpoll.com in their browser.
  5. Click Start Session.
  6. If you will be tracking results, Select a course.
  7. Start polling by selecting Open (Play) on the showbar.
  8. Repeat for each poll item.
  9. Stop polling and display results by selecting Close Polling on the showbar.
  10. Save by selecting the Gear Icon on the showbar.

Access TurningPoint polling results

  1. Sign in to your ELMS-Canvas course.
  2. Select Clickers from the course menu.
  3. Locate the course for which you want to see polling results and select View. The course will open the Roster page.
  4. Click Results on the top navigation. This will load the first session by default.
  5. Select a session from the panel on the left to view results.

Save and upload TurningPoint polling data

Instructors who use clicker polling in the classroom and want to save the results for grading or analytics must upload it immediately to ELMS-Canvas or save the polling data from the classroom computer to their course (or a thumb drive) for access out of the classroom.

Save presentation data

  1. When you open the Turning dashboard at the beginning of the course, click on the name of the class on the left panel.
  2. Start your presentation by clicking on Start now.
  3. When you have completed your presentation and finished polling be sure to save using the TurningPoint menu ribbon in PowerPoint. Click Save then Save Session and Upload Results.
  4. Save the file where you will be able to find it.
  5. A column will appear in the ELMS-Canvas course linked to this Course.

Upload results after the session has ended and PowerPoint has been closed

  1. Open the Turning dashboard.
  2. Click Manage. Click on the Course Name.
  3. Click Session then Import or drag and drop the .tpzx data file you previously saved into the class.
  4. Click Upload Grades.
  5. Select the data you want to save by clicking in the boxes
  6. A column will appear in the ELMS-Canvas course linked to this Course.
