Log on to your Windows computer

To login to a DIT-issued Windows computer for the first time, an on-campus Ethernet connection with DHCP or campus WiFi is required. If this is not possible, please contact support for assistance with your first login.

  1. Turn on your laptop by pressing the power button. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to begin the logon process.
  2. After reading the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), press OK to continue.

  3. Login with your university credentials. To find your UMD Directory ID, visit the Identity Verification website. To Change or reset your passphrase, visit the Passphrase Management page.

Connect to eduroam wireless network

  1. To connect to the UMD eduroam wireless network for the first time, you need to run SecureW2 on the device you want to connect.
  2. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the lower right corner of the screen.

  3. Click eduroam.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Enter your university email address (DirectoryID@umd.edu) and passphrase. Click OK.

Access Software Center

The Software Center application will allow you to install applications.

  1. Press the Windows Key and type Software Center. Click Open to launch the application.

  2. The Software Center application will open and display a list of installed and available applications.

Make Me Admin

Make Me Admin is an application for Windows that will allow a standard user to be elevated to administrator-level, on a temporary basis.

Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an encrypted and secure connection path from a user's machine to its destination through the public Internet. Using a VPN is recommended when travelling outside of continental North America.
