Getting Connected to Eduroam on Linux


Depending on what distribution of Linux a user has, setting up Eduroam properly on the device may require different steps. Try each step to see which ones work with the user’s distribution of Linux

  1. Download the SecureW2 JoinNow wrapper application from setup.wireless.umd.edu
  2. Based on the Linux distribution the user has, custom instructions will be given on the webpage after you download the wrapper. First attempt the steps on the webpage to run the SecureW2 JoinNow wrapper application.
  3. If the steps on the webpage do not work, try one of these options to run the application:

1st Option (no terminal)

  1. Right click on the wrapper application download.
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. Uncheck the box that says allow executing file as program.
  4. Double click on the application to open it
  5. You should be presented with commands to type in the application Terminal. Find the Terminal application, open it, and type in the commands. The user should then be greeted with a prompt in terminal to login. 
  6. Allow the user to sign in as normal

2nd Option (with terminal)

  1. Find the application Termial
  2. In the terminal without the curly braces, type chmod +x {PATH TO DOWNLOAD}. To get the path of the downloaded program, drag and drop the SecureW2 JoinNow wrapper application into the terminal window. Hit the enter key
  3. In the terminal without the curly braces, type sh {PATH TO DOWNLOAD} and hit the enter key. The user should then be greeted with a prompt in terminal to login.
  4. Allow the user to sign in as normal.
