Download and install version 102.9.1

This article works with the version, 102.9.1 (64-bit).

Important: We recently discovered that the most current versions of Mozilla Thunderbird are not compatible with the "ImportExportTool NG" add-on, which is required for importing Google Takeout .MBOX files. For this reason, you must download and install an older version (Version 102.9.1) before following the steps in this documentation. Instructions for installing the older version can be found below.

1. Click the applicable direct download link for Mozilla Thunderbird based on your operating system (the file should be automatically downloaded when you click the link):

   • Windows (64-bit) - https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/102.9.1/win64/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%20102.9.1.exe

   • Mac - https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/102.9.1/mac/en-US/Thunderbird%20102.9.1.dmg

2. Open the downloaded file, Thunderbird Setup 102.9.1.exe (Windows) or Thunderbird 102.9.1.dmg (Mac).
   
   
3. If you have a newer version of Thunderbird installed, be sure to select the option, Create New Profile when installing this application.

For Windows users:

1. Click Run and then Yes in the pop-ups that appear to allow the program to begin the installation.
2. Proceed with following the steps in the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Wizard (default settings should work fine).

For Mac users:

1. Drag the Thunderbird icon into the Applications folder.
2. Open the Applications folder, double-click the Thunderbird icon, and click Open.

UMD existing email account

1. Make sure that IMAP is enabled for your UMD email account.
   
   
2. Open Thunderbird
   
   
   • Windows
     
     If you do not see the menu bar press the alt key to view the menu bar.
     
     
     
     
   • Mac:  The menu bar should automatically appear.
     
     
   From the menu, navigate to File - > New -> Existing Mail Account.
   
3. Enter your name and email address, then click Configure manually.
   
   
4. Enter the following values:
   
   
   • Incoming Server
     
     Server hostname is imap.gmail.com
     Port number is 993
     Connection security is SSL/TLS
     Authentication method is OAuth2
     
     
   • Outgoing Server
     
     Server hostname is smtp.gmail.com
     Port is 465
     Connection security is SSL/TLS
     Authentication method is OAuth2
     
     
   • Click Done.

   

    
5. You will be prompted to sign in with your UMD Google Account. Enter your Directory ID. Click Next.  If @umd.edu is not present, then enter your full UMD email address (directoryid@umd.edu).
   
   
   
   
6. Log in using the Central Authentication Service (CAS) and Duo using your Directory ID and password.
   
   
7. Click Allow to give Mozilla Thunderbird email access to your Google account.
   
   
8. Click Finish to start using Thunderbird.
   
   
9. Visit Import a MBOX File into Gmail with Thunderbird for importing a mbox file.

Read without an email account

1. Move the *.mbox file to a folder on your computer.
   
   
2. From the Account Setup tab, enter a name and email address.  Leave the password blank, then click Configure manually.
   
3. Do not make any changes to the configuration.  Click Advanced config.
   
4. Click Ok to confirm the Advanced configuration.
   
5. Close the Account Settings tab.  Open the Inbox tab.
   
6. Click once to set the focus on Local Folders.
   
7. Visit Import a MBOX File into Gmail with Thunderbird for importing a mbox file.
