How do I request an administrator role?

Before you request an administrator role:

  1. Complete mandatory UMD FERPA Training.
  2. Review the table below and discuss which role is right for you with a supervisor able to approve your request.
  3. Review the Service Level Agreement (SLA) for Enterprise Instructional Technology System Administrator Access.

Then, complete and submit the Request for EITS Administrator Access form.

How can my role as an administrator be ended?

You or the initial approver of your role can send an email to itsupport@umd.edu requesting the role be revoked. Be sure to include your name, the system to which you are an administrator, and the name of the role that is no longer needed. A confirmation email will be sent to the requestor once the role has been revoked.

What administrator roles can be requested using this service?

ELMS-Canvas

Roles available in ELMS-Canvas, what they can do and who normally uses them.
Roles What can be done? Who typically uses this role?
Deputy Able to access all users, data, reports, functionality, and manage some configurations within specific subaccounts. Select college/department support staff.
Manager Able to support users in specific college subaccounts, can masquerade as users, may be a Blueprint administrator upon request. Select DIT- Academic Technology and Innovation staff and college support staff
Researcher Able to access data related to campus-wide outcomes and data related to approved research projects. Staff in the Office of Institutional Research, Planning & Assessment Assistant VP, and select college staff.

ELMS Management Tool (EMT)

Roles available in EMT, what they can do and who normlaly uses them.
Roles What can be done? Who typically uses this role?
Deputy Able to all use tools in EMT that can be used to support faculty and can act on behalf of any user. Select college staff that support faculty.
Manager Able to use all EMT tools to support faculty and can act on behalf of any user with some enhanced functionality. Select DIT and Office of Extended Studies staff that support faculty.
Support Able to use a limited number of EMT tools to support faculty and staff. DIT Service Desk staff.

Open Learning

Roles available in Open Learning, what they can do and who normally uses them.
Role What can be done? Who typically uses this role?
Executive Create course shells, add instructors and other staff to individual courses, create Open Learning course and/or program listings, manage special case student enrollments and withdrawals and reconcile enrollments in Open Learning and ELMS-Canvas as a result of refunds. Select college/department staff.

Who approves the administrator role?

The head of academic/administrative unit such as: dean, assistant dean, department chair, assistant vice president, executive director or director may approve a request to grant access by responding to email they will receive when designated as the approver.

Is there support for administrators?

The Division of Information Technology provides support and training to the administrators. ELMS-Canvas and EMT Administrators may have the option to join the Learning Technology Community of Practice that maintains a communication email list and meets monthly to discuss trends and new features and services at UMD. A request to join can be made by emailing itsupport@umd.edu.
