Enabling an ELMS-Canvas Course Grading Scheme

Table of contents

A grading scheme is a set of criteria that measures a level of student achievement in a course and is applied to the Total column in the gradebook. Grading schemes are built based on percentage ranges assigned to a named value; in most cases the named value is a letter grade.

A grading scheme enables an instructor to represent total points or a cumulative percentage as a letter grade value. A grading scheme is not enabled by default in ELMS-Canvas courses.

Select another grading scheme

Many faculty prefer to include criteria for an A+ in their grading scheme. Two options are available to replace the default grading scheme.

  1. From the View/Edit Grading Scheme window noted in step 5 above, click on the Select Another Scheme link.
  2. Click on the A+ Grading Scheme option that best fits the desired cutoff point for an A+ in your course (options include 98 and 97).
  3. Click on the Use This Grading Standard button.
  4. Click on the Done button.

Modify the default grading scheme

If your desired grade scheme varies from the cutoff percentages associated with the default grade scheme, you can modify the ranges.

  1. From the View/Edit Grading Scheme windows noted in step 5 above, click on the pencil icon to the right of the Select Another Scheme link.
  2. Change the percentages associated with the cutoff value for the letter grades of interest. For instance, if you wish to have a range of <97% to 93% as the range for an A, change the default 92% value to 93%.
  3. Click on the Save button.
  4. Click on the Done button.

NOTE: The A+ grade schemes cannot be modified.
