Node registration from data backup services

To register a node for backup services, you must complete the Data backup service form.  Once the request has been fulfilled you will receive an email regarding your node registration from the Division of Information Technology (DIT).  Ensure you have the information from this confirmation email.

Download and install IBM Spectrum Protect

Tivoli Storage Manager was rebranded as IBM Spectrum Protect in 2015.

  1. Open the confirmation email or IT Support ticket sent by DIT detailing the node information you will need to configure the client. The email will contain a table with the following information:
    • TSM INSTANCE NAME
    • SERVER ADDRESS
    • SERVER PORT
    • SECURE SERVER PORT
    • NODE_NAME
    • INITIAL PASSWORD
    • TECH CONTACTS
    • BILLING GROUP
    • DOMAIN_NAME
    • OPTION_SET
    • SCHEDULE_NAME
    • LICENSE DESCRIPTION
  1. Go to the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup Client Windows - 8.1.x Installer to download the latest binary that is supported on your operating system.
  2. Right-click on the filename (e.g., 8.1.X.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exe) and select Run as Administrator. A new TSMClient folder will be created in the same directory. Change directory to TSMClient, and open the spinstall file.
  3. The InstallShield Wizard window will open. Select your preferred language, and click OK.
  4. Click Install if prompted.
  5. Click Next. Do not change the installation destination folder. Click Next.
  6. Select the setup type Typical, and click Next.
  7. When prompted, click Install. The InstallShield Wizard will copy the new files to your desktop. Click Finish.

Configure IBM Spectrum Protect

  1. Locate the IBM Spectrum Protect application in the Start menu.
  2. Select Backup-Archive GUI.
  3. The IBM SPECTRUM Protect Configuration Wizard window will open. Click Next
  4. On the Options File Task window, select Create a new option file. Click Next.
  5. On the IBM Spectrum Protect Client Node Name window, enter the Node_Name found in the confirmation email (see Step 1 in the Configuration and Install section above). Click Next.

  6. On the IBM Spectrum Protect Client/Server Communications window, select TCP/IP. Click Next.

  7. On the TCP/IP Options window, enter the Server Address and Port Number, found in the confirmation email (see Step 1 in the Configuration and Install section above), in their respective fields. Click Next.  
  8. On the Recommended Include/Exclude List window, click Select All and then Clear All. If there are any common files that you wish to exclude select the appropriate option, otherwise click Next.  (Reason: Common operating system exclusions are pushed from the TSM server.) 
  9. On the Common File Exclusion Selection window, click Clear All. If there are any common files that you wish to exclude select the appropriate option. Otherwise click Next.
  10. On the Domain for Backup window, keep the backup type as Incremental. By default, IBM Spectrum Protect will backup all local drives. If there's a desire to only back up certain drives, select those drives here.

  11. On the Confirm and Apply your configuration window, click Apply. Click Next.
  12. On the Completing your configuration window, click Finish, then close the IBM Spectrum Protect GUI.
  13. Save a copy of C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\baclient\dsm.opt. Rename it dsm-tsmold.opt in the same directory.
  14. Open the original dsm.opt file using Wordpad as an administrator and ensure the following entries are included in the file. If they are not, copy and paste the following entries at the end of the file.

  15. Go to the Start menu and open the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup and Archive Client GUI. You will be prompted for a node used id and password. Leave the node user id as the default, and enter the password from the confirmation email provided by DIT (see Step 1 in the Configuration and Install section above).
    • A message indicating the password was successfully reset will be displayed. For assistance with this step, contact backups-help@umd.edu.
  16. Installation and configuration of the IBM Spectrum protect client for Windows is now complete. The next step is to configure IBM Spectrum Protect client services to perform scheduled backups.
