Publish a Course Syllabus to Testudo

The Publish Course Syllabus tool is used to upload syllabi to a repository that is linked to the Testudo Schedule of Classes. Students, and others with UMD credentials, are able to view this archive of past course syllabi when looking at course offerings. This tool can be used by instructors and those with Syllabus Admin privileges in EMT.

Uploading a New Syllabus or Changing the Syllabus Associated with your Course

  1. Go to the EMT website.
  2. Log in.
  3. Select the Publish Course Syllabus link.
  4. Select a term containing a course for which you wish to upload a syllabus
    • The list of terms reflects those courses that are currently available to students in Testudo.
    • As a result of making this term selection, all courses that are published in the Testudo Schedule of Classes (in which you are assigned primary instructor responsibilities) are displayed.
  5. Select once on a course in the list for course information.
    • Course ID: This is the ELMS-Canvas course ID.
    • Long Name: This is the name of the course in ELMS-Canvas.
    • Syllabus: Only PDF documents are acceptable.
  6. If you wish to make your syllabus viewable in Testudo without requiring viewer authentication, select the Check for no Testudo authentication required checkbox.
    • This will provide a link that can be copied and distributed via email or a web page.
    • If the option is not selected, students will need to provide their UMD credentials to access the syllabus
  7. Select the Select Syllabus button to upload a PDF version of the syllabus to display in association with the course being offered during the selected term.
  8. Navigate to the desired PDF document on your local computer and select the Open button to complete the upload.
    • Regardless of the original name of the file, it is renamed to indicate the course code and term.
    • The uploaded syllabus is now available in the Testudo Schedule of Classes for any course, in any term, that has the exact same course code.
    • Only the most current upload for the course is displayed in the Testudo Schedule of Classes. 
  9. The following option is available. The purpose of this option is to enable faculty to work with the webmasters of their colleges to provide the HTML containing the URL to the syllabus to include on a college or departmental website. If this use case does not apply to you, ignore it.

  10. Select the Sign Out link at the top of the ELMS Management Tool screen to exit the ELMS Management Tool.

Viewing and Downloading the Syllabus Associated with Your Course

To view or download a copy of the syllabus, select the View link in the Action column of the Syllabus Archive, which is located just below the list of Courses Published on Testudo.

Deleting the Syllabus Associated with Your Course

To delete the syllabus associated with your course, select the Delete link in the Action column of the Syllabus Archive, which is located just below the list of Courses Published on Testudo.

Cross-listed courses

Courses that are cross-listed when they are created by schedulers are handled differently than one might expect in the Publish Course Syllabus tool. For a syllabus to be displayed in Testudo for each course, it must be uploaded for each course.

NOTE: Using the EMT to combine sections and courses does not change the way courses are listed in the Publish Course Syllabus tool or in the Testudo Schedule of Classes.

Syllabi Displayed in Testudo Schedule of Classes

Selecting Syllabus Repository displays a scroll-box of syllabi that are available for the course.
