Respondus Lockdown Browser for Students

LockDown Browser is a specialized browser for taking quizzes in ELMS-Canvas. It prevents test takers from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking ELMS-Canvas quizzes. It should not be used in other areas of an ELMS-Canvas course space.

University of Maryland students can download the LockDown Browser software to their local computer from the following links:

NOTE: LockDown Browser does not work with the Linux operating system. Nor can it be used when a virtual machine (VM host applications, Windows emulators or other virtualization tools) are detected on the user's computer. Anti-virus software may also result in a usage error. Shutting down the anti-virus software temporarily while using LockDown Browser may help.

Chromebook users

Respondus released a beta version of a Chromebook extension for LockDown Browser in early 2021. Instructors must allow the use of LockDown Browser for Chromebook on a per exam basis. It is advised that students let their instructors know that they will be using a Chromebook while accessing an exam or quiz in ELMS-Canvas so the instructor enables this option. Issues with the beta browser should be reported directly to Respondus at https://support.respondus.com.

Installation (One time)

Install LockDown Browser if it has not already been installed on the computer on which the quiz is to be taken. Follow the installation steps presented on the download page. Your antivirus software must allow you to install software on your computer. When you see the The installation was successful screen, click on the Close button.

Preparing to take a test in Respondus Lockdown Browser

  1. Before you take a test in LockDown Browser, close all programs (including other browsers), unless one is used to connect you to the Internet.
  2. Locate the LockDown Browser shortcut on the desktop, or find the application in your Programs folder (PC) and double-click it. Mac users can also launch LockDown Browser from the application folder or a short cut icon on their task bar.
  3. If you are prompted to close a blocked program, choose YES.
  4. Log in to your ELMS-Canvas course and navigate to the quiz in the Quiz tool. Do NOT access the quiz through the Calendar, "to do" links or via Announcement reminders. (Doing so can result in a warning from Lockdown Browser that you still need to download the browser when you try to take the quiz.)
  5. Select the Take a Quiz link. Once the quiz has been started with LockDown Browser, you cannot exit until the Submit Answers button is clicked.
