Comparison of Google Groups and Listserv Lists

The Division of Information Technology offers three distribution list types. Below are the key features of each option.

Google Groups

Google Groups is a unique collaboration tool that can facilitate a simple mailing list, a mailing list with advanced functions (like moderation), a question and answer forum, or an announcement board. University of Maryland (UMD) faculty or staff members may Request a Google Group. For more information, see Google Groups.

Key features

For most use cases, DIT recommends a Google Group.

Listserv List

A Listserv list is a mailing list that users can subscribe to and unsubscribe from. They are typically moderated and require work from the owner to maintain. The owner can restrict mailing permissions. Listserv lists are hosted on listserv.umd.edu. For more information, see Request and Administer Listserv Lists.
