Download and Install Tivoli Storage Manager for Macintosh


This solution assumes that you have completed the Node Backup registration form and that you have received a confirmation email from the Division of Information Technology (IT) confirming your node registration.

Download and install the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) software for Macintosh

1. Open the confirmation email you received from the Division of IT detailing the node information you will need to configure the client. In the email you should see information that looks something like this:

2. Download latest binary that is supported on your operating system from https://terpware.umd.edu/Mac/Title/3422.

    To extract unzipped files into specific directory enter:

    tar -xvzf SP_CLIENT_8.1.14_MAC_ML.tar.gz -C <pathtowhereyouwantountar>

    cd <pathtowhereyouwantountar>/TSMCLI_MAC/tsmcli/mac



3. Go to your Downloads location and and open the .dmg package you downloaded in step 2.  Double-click the IBM Spectrum Protect.pkg file.

4. The Install IBM Spectrum Protect  window will open, at the Introduction prompt, click Continue.



5. The Read Me prompt will open showing information about System Requirements and more. Click Continue.

6. The Installation Type prompt will open. Click Install.


7. Enter your computer's information (may not be the same as your university credentials) to login. Click Install Software.

8. The Summary prompt will open and a green circle with a check mark will show telling you the installation was successful. Click Close.

     



Set up the connection profile

1. In the Applications folder, look for the Tivoli Storage Manager folder. Double-click to open.

2. Double-click the file TSM Tools for Administrators.

3. The TSM Tools for Administrators window opens. Select Tivoli Storage Manager and click OK.

4. The TSM window opens informing you that the TSM setup is not complete. Click Yes.

5. The TSM Client Configuration Wizard window will open to the Client Options File. Click Next.

6. The Choose Task window will open, click Create a new options file, then Next.

7. The TSM Client Node Name window will open. Enter the Node Name found in the corresponding information from the confirmation email. Click Next.

8. The Communication Method window will open, select TCP/IP. Click Next.

9. The Communication Options window will open. The Server Address and Port Number fields enter the corresponding information from the confirmation email. Click Next.

10. The TSM Server Stanza window will open. In the Server Stanza field enter the corresponding information from the confirmation email. Click Next.

11. The Include/exclude List window will open. It is recommended you click the Clear All button (this information is pushed from the server). Click Next.

12. The File Exclusion window will open. By default, TSM backs up everything on the system so you can leave this blank. Click Next.

13. The Confirm and Apply window will open. Click Apply.

14. The Finish prompt will open and show that your machine is completing the configuration. Wait until the Status has finished, then click Finish.

15. Exit from TSM.

Change the Node Name password

When you first begin using TSM, you will be prompted to change the automatically generated password that came with your confirmation email. Once it's done, the computer will automatically generate a new password every 180 days, after which you will not be able to change it manually.

1. Launch the TSM Tools for Administrators application.
 
2. The TSM Tools for Administrators window opens. Select Tivoli Storage Manager and click OK.

3. The TSM Login window will open. The User id (NODE_NAME) and Password (INITIAL PASSWORD) can be found in the confirmation email you received.

4. The Your TSM password has expired window will open. Find the current password in the confirmation email. Copy and paste it into the Current password field. Click Change. You should be using a fresh password: not your current Directory ID passphrase and not the one found in the confirmation email.

5. The TSM Client Configuration Wizard window will open, click Finish.

6. The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager window will open.

7. Select File then Exit.

Configure the TSM software for automatic backups

1. Launch the TSM Tools for Administrators application.
 
2. The TSM Tools for Administrators window opens. Select Tivoli Storage Manager and click OK.

3. Login using your computer's information (may not be the same as your university credentials) then click OK.

4. The TSM Login window will open. The User id (NODE_NAME) can be found in the confirmation email you received. Enter the Password you just created in the previous section. Click Login.

5. The Preferences Editor window will open. Click on Web Client. Under the Managed Services Options click Schedule, then Apply.

6. The Warning window will open and ask you to close the Preferences Editor but do not do it at this point. Click OK.

7. Click on Authorization. Under Password Access, click Password Generate. Click Apply then OK.

8. Click on Scheduler. Under Schedule Log, click Prune old entries. In the drop-down option below this select 15 Days. Click Apply then OK.

9. Exit the Client from the File menu.
