Why did UMD seek out this contract, and how did UMD get it?

The University of Maryland has had a software licensing agreement covering faculty and staff for years – giving University of Maryland, College Park faculty and staff access to a host of Microsoft products including Operating System upgrades, Office productivity suite, and programming applications. In 2012, UMD officials signed an addendum to the MEEC (Maryland Educational Enterprise Cooperative) contract to make infrastructure products centrally available to faculty and staff.

What are the benefits of this Server license addendum to the agreement?

Infrastructure products are now centrally provided, as the Division of Information Technology is funding campus-wide enterprise server licenses. Departments and colleges can now get these products at no cost (savings to their budgets), deploy applications developed locally, and allow broad use legally (client access licenses included). This will spur growth in use of these tools and will also help to ensure that the most modern and secure versions are used, as there is now no budgetary impediment to upgrading.

What products are included in the Server license agreement, and how can I get the Server products?

These server applications are available for institutional (university business) use: Forefront, Lync, SharePoint, System Center, and Windows. The server applications are available via the Division of Information Technology's Software Licensing Office, and DVDs can be ordered free of charge via https://terpware.umd.edu/.

What products are included in the software licensing agreement with Microsoft, and how can I get these products?

These products are available: Windows 10, Microsoft Office 365, Visual Studio, and Forefront Security EndPoint Protection.

Depending on the type of software and whether it is intended for personal or university business use, faculty and staff can get products by using a website hosted for the university by an external party, by making purchases at the Terrapin Technology Store, and/or by ordering products via Software Licensing at https://terpware.umd.edu/.

Faculty and staff who use the external website should expect to authenticate with their university credentials. Visit terpware.umd.edu to find more details and to get started.

How may faculty and staff use the products covered by the agreement?

There are some terms that UMD faculty and staff should become familiar with when selecting software under the UMD software licensing agreement.
Since UMD faculty and staff do not own the software license in these cases, you will be required to remove the software from your machine immediately upon expiration of the licensed period or upon termination of your employment at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Some Work at Home media can be purchased in person at the Terrapin Technology Store for $10. You must show your valid University ID card to obtain the software. The $10 price covers the media the software is stored on – you do not own the license, the  University of Maryland does. You will be advised of additional conditions for use of the Work at Home software as you are making your purchasing decisions at the tech store.  All sales are final; there are no returns or exchanges.

In addition, you can download Work at Home software from TERPware. Visit terpware.umd.edu to find more details and to get started. Microsoft titles are limited to ONE COPY per customer. This software does not come with any upgrade options – if a new version is released, you must make a new purchase.
UMD faculty and staff can purchase Microsoft software for personal use at the Terrapin Technology Store while supplies last. What kinds of support will be available for use of Microsoft products?

The Service Desk staff will make a best effort attempt to support customers needing help with installing, configuring, and using Microsoft Office. Contact the Call Center by calling 301.405.1500, open a Live Chat session or a ticket at https://itsupport.umd.edu/. To open a ticket, click Home, log in with your university credentials, click New Request, and fill out and submit the form.

What if Microsoft releases new products? Are all new products covered throughout the life of the contract?

The contract is written in such a way to cover us for both new versions and new releases for institutional  use purposes, including desktop suite, operating system upgrades, and server applications.

How do I download and install a Microsoft product?

Go to the IT Service Center site and in the Category drop-down menu select Software Downloads. Once that search is returned, click on the drop-down menu for the sub-category of your choice (e.g., Macintosh or Windows).
