Connect Your Gaming System to the Internet


Gaming consoles like Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, and the Nintendo Switch must be registered through the MyDevices portal to connect with Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. You must be connected to the GlobalProtect VPN to access this site. To connect your gaming system to the internet, you'll need to:

Note: Do not attempt to connect your system to the umd-guest network. It may result in an error making registration to umd-iot fail for 24 hours.

Find the MAC address of your gaming system

Xbox Series X or Series S

These steps are adapted from Meraki.com

  1. Navigate to the Settings page.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Select Advanced Settings.
  4. Under IP settings, the MAC address will be listed next to Wired MAC and Wireless MAC on the right-hand side of the screen.

Playstation 5

  1. Power on the PS5 without a disc in the system.
  2. In the PS5 menu, arrow up and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Network.
  4. Scroll down to View Connection Status.
  5. The MAC Address will be listed next to MAC Address (LAN) and MAC Address (Wi-Fi).

Xbox One

  1. Navigate to My Games and Apps.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Network.
  4. Select Advanced Settings.
  5. The MAC Addresses for the wired and wireless adapters should be displayed.
  6. Now register your gaming console.

Playstation 4

  1. Press the Settings icon (usually the first on the left).
  2. Press System Information.
  3. The MAC address is displayed on this screen.

Nintendo Switch

  1. Press System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Scroll down and press Internet.
  3. The MAC address will be listed under System MAC Address.

Connect your gaming system to Wi-Fi

Note: Devices connecting to the umd-iot wireless network will not be able to communicate with one another at this time. 

Xbox Series X or Series S

These steps are adapted from support.xbox.com

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
  3. Select Set up wireless network.
  4. Press the umd-iot network from the network list.
  5. Enter the randomly generated password.
    • 12 digits and case-sensitive.

Playstation 5

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Press Network.
  3. Press Settings.
  4. Press Set up Internet Connection.
  5. Press the umd-iot network from the Networks found list.
  6. Enter the randomly generated password.
    • 12 digits and case-sensitive.

Xbox One

  1. Press Settings to enter the menu.
  2. Press Network.
  3. Press Set Up wireless network.
  4. Press the umd-iot network from the network list.
  5. Enter the randomly generated password.
    • 12 digits and case-sensitive.

Playstation 4

  1. From the PS4 home screen, press Settings.
  2. Press Network.
  3. Press Set Up Internet Connection.
  4. Press Use Wi-Fi.
  5. Press the umd-iot network from the network list.
  6. Select how you want to set up your connection: Easy or Custom.
    • We recommend pressing Easy.
  7. Enter the randomly generated password.
    • 12 digits and case-sensitive.

Nintendo Switch

  1. Press System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Press Internet.
  3. Press Internet Settings.
    • The Nintendo Switch will automatically search for nearby Wi-Fi signals.
  4. Press the umd-iot network from the networks list.
  5. Enter the randomly generated password.
    • 12 digits and case-sensitive.

Connect your gaming system using an Ethernet cable

Xbox Series X or Series S

Connect an Ethernet cable from your Xbox to an Ethernet port. The connection will be established and configured automatically.

Playstation 5

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Press Network.
  3. Press Settings.
  4. Press Set up Internet Connection.
  5. Press Set up Wired LAN

Xbox One

Connect an Ethernet cable from your Xbox to an Ethernet port. The connection will be established and configured automatically.

Playstation 4

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your PS4 to an Ethernet port. 
  2. From the PS4 home screen, press Settings.
  3. Press Network.
  4. Press Set Up Internet Connection.
  5. Press Use a LAN Cable.
  6. Press the umd-iot network from the network list.
  7. Select how you want to set up your connection: Easy or Custom.
    • We recommend pressing Easy.

Nintendo Switch

  1. Connect a wired LAN (Ethernet) adapter to the Nintendo Switch dock.
    • This system does not have an Ethernet port.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from your system to an Ethernet port.
  3. Insert the Nintendo Switch console into the dock.
  4. Press System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  5. Press Internet.
  6. Press Internet Settings.
  7. Press Wired Connection.
  8. Press Connect to the Internet via Wired Connection.
