Create ELMS-Canvas Single Section Course Space

The EMT Create Single Section Courses tool can be used to separate multi-section courses into individual course spaces in instances where instructors wish to manage students by section in ELMS-Canvas course spaces. For example, an instructor teaching UNIV200 sections 0101, 0201 may want an individual course space for each section.  The instructor would use the EMT tool to create a course space for UNIV200 section 0201 (there is no need to request a separate course space for section 0101; that section remains enrolled in the "parent" course space). Once a new course space has been created for a section, all students enrolled in that section have access to the new space (once it is published) and no longer see the original "parent" course space.

The Create Single Section Courses tool is also used to create spaces for courses that are not automatically provisioned with ELMS-Canvas course spaces, e.g., experiential or independent study classes usually represented by numbers that end in 8 or 9 like 439, 449, 488, 489, 498, 499 or those course with such numbers and a letter (e.g., 499A).

NOTE: Using this tool to create a single section course for a section that is part of an active course is problematic. If students in the section have submitted assignments and/or received grades, the student enrollments will move to the new course; however, their submissions and grades will not.

To make the request, go to emt.umd.edu.

  1. When prompted, log in with your Directory ID and passphrase.
  2. Select Create Single Section Courses in the EMT menu.
  3. The Create Single Section Courses window will open. Select a term from the Select Term drop-down menu.
  4. Select Load sections from SIS.
  5. The Sections field will open. Select the course and section for which an ELMS-Canvas course space should be created.
    Section Menu
  6. Select Submit.
  7. View the new space creation details and select Confirm. The instructor/requester will have immediate access to the course space.  Student enrollment(s) will be imported from UMEG within two hours.

When faculty go to their ELMS-Canvas course space they will see the updated course code (e.g., AASP100-0101) in the short name field of the course.

NOTE: Only one single-section course space can be created at a time.  If you are creating several single section course spaces associated with a single parent course space, you may need to wait 5-10 minutes between each request.

NOTE: A message will display in the Create Single Section Courses tool in the ELMS-Canvas Management tool if:

The only time a message will not be displayed is when an ELMS-Canvas course is not published, no content, does not have grades, and does not have a submission.

NOTE: Only one single-section course space can be created at a time. If you are creating several single section course spaces associated with a single parent course space, you may need to wait 5-10 minutes between each request.

Duplicating Course Spaces Note: If you are interested in having two course spaces with the same student enrollments (e.g., 0101 LAB and 0101 LECTURE spaces), this duplication action can only be performed by an ELMS-Canvas administrator.  Please request assistance for such requests by reaching out to itsupport@umd.edu. Use the term duplicate or clone in your request.

NOTE: If an ELMS-Canvas section is canceled via SIS then the canceled section enrollments will disappear in the ELMS-Canvas course after the morning load. However, the section where the instructor was active will still remain in the ELMS-Canvas course. If an instructor would like to have this section removed, have them email itsupport@umd.edu to get this accomplished.
