Adding to the Panopto Dictionary

Introduction

The Panopto custom dictionary is part of the automated machine captioning feature that is enabled by default on all Panopto folders. The custom dictionary helps Panopto’s automatic captioning service recognize and accurately caption difficult, specialized, or commonly mispronounced words. The dictionary may include terms that are specific to UMD or your course material. For example, the dictionary might contain the suggested pronunciation of "mak el din" for the word "McKeldin."

In situations where term capacity is reached, the Division of IT reserves the right to remove dictionary terms that are outdated, not necessary, or that are deemed to be of a lower priority based on relevant stakeholder input.

Instructions

To request additions to the Panopto dictionary, fill out the Request to Add to Panopto Dictionary form.

Add your word and associated pronunciation pair for as many terms as you need. You can attach a spreadsheet of word/pronunciation pairs if your list is long. The request will be reviewed by the Panopto administrators, and approved entries will be added.

Please note that the custom dictionary is shared by all of UMD and has a limited capacity. We ask that you only include words that are used frequently and are often misunderstood by the machine captioning system.
