What is a Prompt?
A prompt is the instruction or input you give to an AI model that guides how it responds. Basically, you’re telling the AI what kind of output you want. The clearer and more specific your prompt, the better and more relevant the AI’s response will be.
This differs from using a search engine. When you enter a phrase into a search engine, you’re submitting a query, a request to locate existing information from its vast index of the web. In contrast, a prompt tells the AI model to generate a response based on patterns it has learned from large amounts of training data.
While AI-generated content is influenced by existing information, it isn’t retrieved directly from a database or the internet, instead it’s produced by combining and rephrasing learned knowledge. In short: a search query helps you find what already exists, while a prompt helps you create something new. That something new could be a wide range of things; a draft email, a summary of research, a lesson plan, a code snippet, a marketing blurb, or even a creative story. In other words, prompts let you turn ideas into usable text, code, or explanations generated on demand.
