Introduction
This guide will walk you through remotely connecting to a Windows endpoint (desktop/laptop) on the policy driven network. Camera, folder and printer redirection are supported by this service.
Instructions
Prerequisites
- Your local IT administrator has followed the Remote Desktop (RDP) Setup guide to enable your access on the target computer.
- Your local IT administrator has requested that you be granted access to the Remote Desktop Gateway service.
- You need to be connected to GlobalProtect VPN to remotely access your computer.
Restrictions
- Sessions idle for greater than 10 minutes will be disconnected.
- These instructions and this service cannot be used to connect to devices running a Windows Server operating system.
How to connect from a Windows device
- In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote Desktop Connection, and then select Remote Desktop Connection.
- In Remote Desktop Connection, type the name of the PC you want to connect to
- Click Show Options.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Click on Settings button.
- Enter the following under Connection settings
- Select the Use these RD Gateway server settings. Enter rdsgateway.umd.edu for the server name.
- Set the logon method to Ask for password.
- Uncheck the Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.
- Under logon settings, uncheck Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer. Click Ok.
- If you are connecting to an EntraID only machine click on the Advanced tab, and under User authentication, check the Use a web account to sign in to the remote computer. Your local IT administrator can help you determine if you are connecting to an EntraID only machine.
- Click the General tab.
- Click the Save button or Save As if you want to name the RDP file.
- Click the Connect button. You will be prompted for username and password to authenticate. You might also be prompted with Remote Desktop Security warning, click Connect. Enter your username in the following format, AD\DirectoryID. Enter your passphrase and click Connect.
- If you are connected to an EntraID device you might also be prompted to authenticate again using your Microsoft account. Enter your DirectoryID@umd.edu and your passphrase. It will prompt if you want to connect to the target computer, then click Yes.
- You should now be remotely connected to the computer.
How to connect from a MacOS device
- Search and open the Windows App. (You can install Windows App from IT Self-Support application if your computer is managed by Jamf)
- On Windows App, click the + sign on the upper right corner and then click Add PC.
- Enter the following information
- PC Name: Enter your target computer name.
- Credentials: Click on the Ask when required pull down, and choose Add credentials. Enter your username in the formation AD\DirectoryID then click the Add button.
- Gateway: Click on the Gateway pulldown and choose Add gateway. Enter rdsgateway.umd.edu.
- Click Add Credentials and enter AD\DirectoryID. Then click the Add button.
- Uncheck the Bypass for local addresses.
- Click Add.
- Back on Windows App, double click the PC you added, then login using your UMD credentials in the format AD\DirectoryID.
- You should now be connected to the target Windows device.
