Differences between Terpmail and @umd.edu email adresses

All UMD members can be emailed at direcotryid@umd.edu. This is a forwarding address, which routes mail depending on which mail accounts users have. By university policy, it routes to in this order:

  1. umd.edu Google account if the user has one
  2. TERPmail.umd.edu Google account if the user has one
  3. Personal email address if they have neither (newly admitted students).

All students are given TERPmail.umd.edu Google accounts. TERPmail is meant to be used for academic and personal use. Alumni keep access to their TERPmail accounts after graduating, though the storage quota is reduced.

All grad students, faculty, and staff are given umd.edu Google accounts. Undergraduates may be sponsored by a faculty or staff for one. This typically occurs from having a student job, but there are other reasons they might get sponsored. All mail related to university business should go there. It is not recommended to use this for academic or personal work because the account will be revoked after they stop attending, or leave their position at the university.

Is it possible to have both a an @umd.edu address and a TERPmail address?

Yes, all students, are given TERPmail Google accounts that they keep ownership of. Students often become faculty, staff, or graduate students, which would give them access to @umd.edu Google accounts that you would lose access to after leaving the university.

Do I keep TERPmail after graduation?

Yes, though the memory quota will be reduced.

Can I forward my @umd or @terpmail to other addresses?

Reference this FAQ on information about policy, but automatically forwarding UMD emails and documents to a non-UMD email account is prohibited.

Does Terpmail use SSO?

TERPmail doesn't use SSO to log in, it has its own TERPmail-specific password. If you want to log into your @terpmail.umd.edu Google account, you'll have to use that TERPmail email address and password.

Do I have to authenticate with @umd to access services and systems?

UMD-affiliated services and websites not using the CAS using email addresses as the user's identity would use directoryid@umd.edu to gain access. TERPmail is an exception to this protocol.
