Install and Connect to GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Install on macOS and Windows

  1. Go to GlobalProtect site. Sign in when you are directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page.
  2. Click "" GlobalProtect Agent at the top right of the portal.
  3. Download the GlobalProtect agent that matches your computer's operating system.

  4. Run the installation file. You will need your computer’s administrator username and password to install it.
    • On macOS Run the downloaded file named GlobalProtect.pkg and continue through the installation instructions.
    • On Windows, double-click the installation file GlobalProtect64.msi at the bottom right of your computer.

Connect on macOS and Windows

  1. Once installed, the GlobalProtect icon GlobalProtect icon will appear in the menu bar at the top of your screen on macOS and the bottom on Windows.
  2. Click the icon to set up the VPN.
  3. If this is your first time using GlobalProtect you will be guided through a brief setup:
    • Your default browser will open with a checkbox to Always allow access.umd.edu to open links of this type in the associated app.
    • Check the dialogue box and then select the Open GlobalProtect button.
    • You only have to check the box once. You will not see this prompt during your next connection to the VPN if checked.
    • You may need to connect multiple times to initiate this setup.
    • If you don’t see the popup, select click here on the Authentication Complete browser page.

  4. Type access.umd.edu into the Portal Address field then click Connect.

    NOTE: If on a macOS the application stays on the Connecting screen and does not prompt for your NetID information, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Unlock the settings page using your Mac's administrator username and password and then Allow the computer to load the Palo Alto software (GlobalProtect).
  5. You will be directed to the Central Authentication Service (CAS) page to sign in.
    • When successfully connected on macOS, the application will say connected and the icon in the top bar will turn opaque and include a shield "". 
    • On Windows, the icon is located in the toolbar.

Install and connect on iOS or Android

  1. Go to the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) and install GlobalProtect by Palo Alto.
  2. Tap GlobalProtect open.
  3. If this is your first time using GlobalProtect you will be guided through a brief setup:

  4. Type access.umd.edu in the address bar.
  5. Tap Connect.
  6. On iOS: 
    • Login at the CAS login page. Complete the MFA authentication.
    • tap Allow giving GlobalProtect permission to add configurations. You will be prompted to enter your device’s passcode.
  7. On an Android:
    • Login at the CAS login page. Complete the MFA authentication.
    • a Connection Request will display. Tap OK. The VPN icon appears in the status bar.
  8. You will then be connected to GlobalProtect.
    • iOS connection verification and disconnect button.
      Once connected, the app will display connected and to Tap to disconnect.
    • The VPN icon VPN key icon will appear in the status bar to indicate you are connected on Android.

Connect on Linux

Since the GlobalProtect installation requires multi-factor authentication (MFA), only the GUI version of the GlobalProtect client can be used with Linux systems. The following Linux versions are supported for the GUI version:

Install instructions

  1. Download the appropriate file for your Linux system from TERPWare.
    • GlobalProtect_UI_rpm-5.2.6.0-18.rpm for RedHat 7 or Centos
    • GlobalProtect_UI_deb-5.2.6.0-18.deb for Ubunto and Debian
  2. Open the terminal on your device and install GlobalProtect from the directory where you downloaded the above file. Note that the commands may vary depending on your version of Linux.
  3. When prompted for a portal address, enter access.umd.edu.
  4. Once installation is complete, GlobalProtect will appear in your menu bar at the top of your Linux system.

International student instructions

There are two additional steps for international students using GlobalConnect; add a portal and select a gateway.

Add the access.umd.edu portal

You can switch between different portals without having to re-enter the portal address each time you connect. The most recently connected portal is selected from the status panel.

  1. Select the portal drop-down menu.
  2. Select Manage Portals.
  3. Enter access.umd.edu in the portal address field.
  4. Click Save.

Select the TunnelAll Gateway

  1. Select the Gateway drop-down menu.
  2. Select TunnelAll Gateway.
