Enable Gmail Offline

UMD Gmail allows you to access your Gmail inbox offline when using a Chrome browser (version 61 or higher). While working offline, you can write, delete, and archive up to 90 days of messages.

To work offline, you must enable Gmail offline from your Gmail settings. To learn how to work offline, follow the steps below:

NOTE: We recommend downloading the Google Chrome web browser before attempting the following steps. If administrative rights are not available, contact a departmental Information Technology administrator or the Service Desk to assist with installation.

  1. Open a Chrome web browser. Log into your UMD Gmail account.
  2. From your inbox, click the Gear icon in the upper right corner. Select Settings.
  3. Click Offline.
  4. Check the Enable offline mail box.
  5. Go to Security. Select one of the following options:
    • Keep offline data on my computer. Data created during an offline session will be stored on your device. This data will not be deleted until you disable offline mail.
    • Remove offline data from my computer. Data created during an offline session will not be stored on your device and will need to be resynced to your computer when signing back into an online Gmail session.

The offline settings screen shows the configuration outlined in this article.
