Download and Install Windows 10 - Institutional

NOTE: The Institutional version of Windows 10 can only be used by faculty and staff and installed only on machines that are owned by the university. 


  1. Go to TERPware to download the software.
    NOTE: If you have already downloaded the software, skip ahead to the installation instructions under the Install header.
  2. Click Log In on the horizontal navigation bar at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Software menu, under the PC tab, click Operating Systems.
  4. Click the appropriate Windows 10 link to download the installation software.
    NOTE: If you have Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and do not know whether your computer is 32 or 64-bit, visit Determine if Your Windows Operating System is 32-bit or 64-bit. Generally, you will want to install the same architecture (number of bits) as your current version.

  5. Click the Download link at the bottom of the page under the DOWNLOADS section.You'll click the Windows10 Enterprise download link.
  6. If your download page shows Product Key information, request the key and write it down for later. Click Save and choose a destination folder for the download.
    NOTE: Your Downloads folder makes a convenient destination folder. Open the downloaded installation image file (e.g., Windows 10 Enterprise 64bit).

  1. Navigate to the download package and click setup.

    Click Setup

  2. The User Account Control window will open. Click Yes. A Preparing Windows window will open. Wait for the counter to reach 100%.
  3. Select Download and install updates (recommended) and click Next. Make sure that I want to help make the installation of Windows better is unchecked.
  4. The Getting updates window will open. This window may open several different times throughout the installation process. Let it finish and click Next.
    NOTE: If window closes after checking for updates, navigate to the folder to which you saved the installation files and click setup.
  5. Click Accept to accept the License terms. If you want to keep your current settings, files and applications, accept the checked options:
    • Install Windows 10 Enterprise
    • Keep personal files and apps
      NOTE: To modify those options or install a clean Windows installation (without saving your installed apps and your files), click Change what to keep. You will be able to select and deselect the options on the page. Do not deselect Keep personal files and apps unless you have a backup of any important information on your computer.
  6. If your data is backed up, click the Install button to start the upgrade process.
    NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you back up any and all important data on your computer before you carry out any upgrade on your operating system. There is always a possibility that an operating system upgrade will fail and you will lose data. This even applies to upgrades designed to keep your files and data. Assistance with backups is available if you call the Call Center at 301-405-4354 or visit the Terrapin Tech Service Desk located on the ground floor of the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center (ESJ), by the Campus Drive entrance.
  7. The Making sure you're ready to install window will open and test your system. Wait for it to finish and click Next.
  8. Ready to install window might open again. Click the Install button. The Installing Windows 10 window will open. Wait while Windows installs. It is normal for your computer to restart several times during this process. 


Set up 

  1. Upgrading Windows will take some time to complete. When it is complete, a Welcome Screen will open. Click Next. 
  2. You will need to change a series of Windows customization settings. Under the Express settings, Windows 10 collects a significant amount of information about your Internet, App and Operating System use. Do not use the express settings. Click Customize settings at the bottom left of the screen.
  3. Set all four of the on/off buttons on the Personalization and Location screen to off.

  4. Set all five of the on/off buttons on the Browser and protection screen to off.

  5. On the Default Apps selection screen, you can accept the defaults or click Let me choose my default apps to choose different apps to open different types of media by default. Click Next when ready.
  6. A blank screen just before the computer restarts is normal. Wait while setup finishes initializing your new installation. Congratulations! You have installed Windows 10.
    NOTE: If you see a message on-screen stating that you have not activated Windows, click that message and follow the steps.
