Install and Configure Spectrum Protect 8.1.x Backup-Archive Client for Macintosh

NOTE: This knowledge base entry is relevant for older versions of Spectrum Protect that the Division of Information Technology (DivIT) will cease supporting in the near future.  It has been maintained here temporarily as DivIT migrates data backup services to a new architecture.  Please visit for updated service information and to request migration to the updated backup service environment.

Installing Spectrum Protect 8.1.x 6 for Mac OS X

  1. Download the TSM Client for Mac 6.2.x binaries from

  2. Make sure your account has administrator rights. Double click the installer. This will present you with the package, 8.1.X-0-TIV-TSMBAC-Mac.dmg

  3. Click IBM Spectrum Protect.pkg. Follow the screen instructions as specified. Click Continue.

  4. Read the release notes, paying particular attention to software requirements and known limitations. When ready, click Continue.

  5. Select the Volume you want to install the application in. The default is the system drive Macintosh HD. If you prefer another location, click on Change Install Location.... Once satisfied, click Install. Enter your user password when requested for administrator rights to install the software.

  6. If your installation was successful, you'll see the following window:

Configuring the Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client 

You can access the Spectrum Protect(SP) Client GUI from the Applications menu in a Finder window.

  1. Go to FinderApplications, then Spectrum Protect.

  2. Use the SP Tools for application in order to configure SP for the entire system. If you don't see the window as below, then you did not open SP Tools for Administrators. 

    What application do you want to run with administrator priviledges? IBM Spectrum Protext, Start the Client Acceptor Daemon or, Stop the Client Acceptor Daemon.

  3. Select TSM Tools for Administrators and click OK. Enter your Macintosh username and password when prompted. The IBM Spectrum Protect Client Configuration Wizard will open.

  4. Click Next. Select Create a new options file. You may select Import from existing options file for use if you already have one from a previous installation. Click Next

  5. The node name will be the same as the machine name you specified on the Node Registration Form or as confirmed by the TSM Administrators. Enter in your given node name and click Next

  6. You will be communicating via TCP/IP. Click Next

  7. Your SP  Administrator should also have provided you with the TSM server address (also called TCPSERVERADDRESS) and port (also called TCPPORT) in your node registration confirmation letter. Enter those in the next window exactly as it appears in the letter and click Next

  8. In the server stanza field, enter the SERVERNAME name as provided by your TSM Administrator in your node registration confirmation letter. Click Next.

  9. You are now presented with a list of file and directory backup excludes. In most cases, these excludes should be accepted. Click Next to accept the list. 

  10. The next window will provide you with a list of common file types. You may choose those file types for which you do NOT require backups. By default, no files are selected and the system will back up all file types. Click Next when ready. 

  11. Moving on to the next screen after making selections, you can apply your options. Click Apply

  12. The system then applies your configuration and creates/updates to the SP options file. It will then try to contact the SP server you specified. 

  13. You will be prompted to login to the SP server. Enter the password that was supplied to you in your node registration confirmation letter. 

  14. You will then be forced to change the SP  node password. When prompted, enter your old password. Then select a password and enter it twice in the appropriate fields. Make sure remember this password for the following steps. Click OK.

  15. You should see a window saying Completing your configuration once the above is completed. Your SP configuration is done. Click Finish.

  16. Exit the SP Client GUI completely in order for changes to take effect. 

Configuring the SP Client Acceptor Daemon

Open the Spectrum Protect (SP) Backup-Archive Client GUI from the Applications menu from a Finder window. 

  1. Go to FinderApplications, then Tivoli Storage Manager.

  2. Open the SP Tools for application in order to access to SP Client GUI with administrator privileges. If you don't see the window as below, then you did not open SP Tools for Administrators.
    What application do you want to run with administrator priviledges? IBM Spectrum Protext, Start the Client Acceptor Daemon or, Stop the Client Acceptor Daemon.

  3. Click on Spectrum Protect from within SP Tools for Administrators. Enter your Macintosh username and password when prompted. Then enter your SP node password

  4. Review your Preferences by clicking on Edit, then Client Preferences from the GUI.

  5. Navigate to Authorization on the left pane of the Preferences window. Set Password Access to generate by selecting the radio button next to Password Generate. Click Apply to save the setting. Click OK on the warning displayed.

  6. Next, navigate to Web Client on the left side pane. Under Managed Services, select Schedule. Click Apply to apply the change. Click OK on the warning displayed.

  7. Exit the TSM Client GUI by clicking on File, then Exit

  8. Now setup the actual SP Client Acceptor Daemon. This Daemon is responsible for contacting the SP server periodically for backup services.

    • Click on SP Tools for Administrators once more. 
    • Select Start the Client Acceptor Daemon. Click OK.
    • Click OK in the warning dialog.
    • Enter your Macintosh username and password for administrator privileges.
    • You should see that the Client Acceptor Daemon started successfully with a PID number.

  9. You have now with successfully installed and configured your Tivoli Storage Manager Backup/Archive Client. Your system will be henceforth backed up regularly from a TSM central backup schedule. To check what SP does on a daily basis, open/Library/Logs/tivoli/tsm/dsmsched.log with a text reader and examine for any error notifications. Ideally, you should see entries such as the following:

Re-configuring your SP Client 

Change or update your Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) configurations after the installation:

  1. Open SP

  2. Click Utilities, then Setup Wizard from within the SP Tools for Administrators, then Spectrum Protect

  3. Select the option Help me configure the SP Client Options File

  4. This will again take you through normal procedure of configuring your SP setting and updating the Options File.
