NOTE: This knowledge base entry is relevant for older versions of IBM Spectrum Protect that the Division of Information Technology (DIT) will cease supporting in the near future. It has been maintained here temporarily as DIT migrates data backup services to a new architecture. Please review Data Backups for updated service information and to request migration to the updated backup service environment.

Follow these additional instructions to configure Windows-based workstations and laptops. If the node is a server, DO NOT apply these instructions unless recommended by ISP Administrative staff.
- The first step is to configure the client as per instructions on the help desk webpage: Installing IBM Spectrum Protect (aka:TSM) 8.1.x for Windows.
- For desktops and laptops, open file support is necessary to backup in-use PST files:
- Open the ISP Client GUI.
- Open the ISP Client Configuration Wizard by clicking on Utilities then Setup Wizard.
- Check Help me configure Open File Support, then click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Apply, then click Finish.
- If the machine asks to be rebooted, please reboot.
- For desktops and laptops with PST files to backup, subfile backups are recommended to minimize the amount of data a backup will send over a potentially slow network (especially true of laptops).
- Open the ISP Client GUI.
- Open the ISP Preferences window by clicking Edit then Client Preferences.
- Select the Backup tab.
- Under the Adaptive sub-file backup group, click Use adaptive sub-file backup:

- Click Apply and OK.
- Open the ISP Preferences window by clicking Edit then Client Preferences.
- Select the Include-Exclude tab.
- Click Add.
- Under Category select Backup.
- Under Type select Exclude.Subfile.
- Under File or Pattern enter: *:\...\*.
- Click OK.
- Click Add.
- Under Category select Backup.
- Under Type select Include.subfile.
- Under File or Pattern enter *:\...\*.PST.
- Click OK.
- You should see a similar list on the right hand side of the window. The important part being the order and syntax of the exclude.subfile and include.subfile pair:

- Click Apply then OK.
- Exit and restart the ISP client GUI for the changes to take effect.
- Verify the ISP Client setup for the new client user. Many new client users ask if ISP is working correctly and is scheduled for backups. Here, it's assumed that the node will be on a scheduled backup. Some users request to perform backups manually. If that's the case, please notify backups-help@umd.edu. The standard however, is to schedule the backups.
- Open the folder C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\baclient.
- Double click the dsmsched.log and open with Notepad or Wordpad.
- You should see text similar to the following:

These messages indicate that the client received a response from the server regarding its scheduled backup time. This is the proper function.
If you receive other notifications, such as password problems, or no output in dsmsched.log than the setup is missing something. Verify that the services are installed and started and that the ISP node can authenticate to the server.
